Silicosis is a lung disorder caused by inhalation of tiny particles of silicon dioxide (SiO2) in the form of unbound (free) crystalline silica (quartz) or less commonly, by inhaling silicates where silica is bound to other materials like talc. It is the oldest known occupational disease of the lungs and even today is responsible for thousands of deaths.
