Chetna Mahila Swasthya Kendra

(Functioning Since 2001)

Jan Chetna Manch, Bokaro (JCMB)(Charitable)

The hospital is a community based, women’s run health centre. It mainly provides quality, rational care to women of poor families during pregnancy and childbirth. The centre, and the services it provides, resulted from the demands of the members of the women’s groups in the area, which are now over 500 with over 8000 members. These groups were also facilitated by ‘Jan Chetna Manch, Bokaro’ (JCMB). These women demanded a centre to cater to their needs, with quality affordable and accessible health care, especially during pregnancy and childbirth.

In order to provide such care, and ensure sustainability, the centre is overwhelmingly run by local women, who have been trained mostly on-site. Apart from the centre-based services JCMB has a robust network of 8 Community Health Workers who reach out to a population of around one lakh, through 70 village-based swasthya sakhis (health guides) and the women’s groups.

Apart from childbirth-related services, the centre treats other women’s health problems, illnesses of older children, and has a mental health clinic in partnership with the Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi.
