Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre

Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is a non-profit organization located in Silchar, Assam and caters to the needs of patients suffering from cancer. The hospital is pro poor and provides world class cancer care to its patients, who all hail from very poverty-stricken regions of Assam, Meghalaya and other neighbouring states. The hospital caters to the requirements of more than 24,000 patients every year, and its Director, Dr Ravi Kannan was recently awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his service, after having performed 70,000 surgeries, free of cost.

OUR PATIENT PROFILE

·        At least 80% are daily wage earners or agricultural labourers – 59% of them earn Rs. 10,000 or less per month,

·        37% of the said 59% earn Rs. 6,000 or less.

·        80% of the patients come from families of 5 or more members and often with single bread-earners.

·        45% of them live in kaccha houses and have limited access to the basic necessities, let alone advanced treatment facilities.

·        Poverty and lack of awareness has been noted as the primary reason behind the failure of cancer prevention or early detection of the disease.
